Shed Hunt Supplies

The sport if shed hunt requires a few supplies. I made this guide to help students know what supplies are needed with information about each item. It is also important to remember what works for one dog may not work for another and what collars, leashes, etc you use may vary depending on your dog.

Antler Wax Scent

I use bone clone the majority of the time I train but I listed a few options as training on a variety of antler wax is a good thing especially if you compete in multiple venues.

Bone Clone - Bone clone is the official odor used by UKC in trials. Is also the most common odor used when training dogs to hunt for antlers from wild deer.

Dokken’s Rack Wax - This is one of the odors that is recommended by NASDA.

Dog Bone Antler Scent - This is one of the doors that is recommended by NASDA.

Rubber Antlers

I start all dogs on rubber antlers when I start training to prevent dogs from becoming Shed shy by minimizing the risk of them having a bad experience when learning to handle an antler. They sell them in both white and brown. I do try and make the rubber antlers very visible in the beginning.

Real Antlers

Depending on the sport the antlers you use will vary but all organizations in the US have a preference for white tail deer antlers. I purchase my antlers from the antler store. NOTE: Their antlers are very large sized and most small breeds will need an XS size and most large breeds will need a small size.
